If you would like to recieve the Newsletter go to that resource, now back to general Hawaii news: Following eight months of imprisonment, she wanted to avoid further bloodshed of her people, and she surrendered to the government of the United States.
Hawaii then became a U.S. territory. Iolani Palace was used as a capitol for the new territory. In1959, Hawaii became the 50th state. The residence became the capitol for the state of Hawaii.
A new state capitol was built in1969. The hitherto neglected Iolani Palace was restored with the efforts of the “Friends of Iolani Palace.” on Oahu island. The Iolani Palace is evidence of the royal heritage of Hawaii. It is a symbol for the restoration of Hawaii’s independence and sovereignty to many of its native people. BTW if you are in need of a good Hawaii Nissan dealership I must recommend this great resource. It is superb if you either need to rent or otherwise a Nissan car while in the state. They also provide Oahu used cars as well. The Iolani Palace is not the original palace. The original palace was built during the reign of Kamehameha III, and was a one-story Greek-revival building made out of coral block. It covered only one-third the floor area of the present palace.
It was purchased by Kamehameha III from Governor Mataio Kekuanaoa of Oahu. He had built it for his daughter (Kamehameha III’s niece), Princess Victoria Kamamalu, when he moved his capital from Lahaina to Honoluly in 1845.
Be sure to take the guided tour, since there are areas that are off-limits to unguided guests.
